A turning point in the development of immigration law is the abolition of mandatory legal representation, which came into effect in 1994. With this amendment to the law, the legislator apparently wanted to ensure that not the lawyer’s right to practice law, but the client’s consent to the proposed approach as a result of his or her entitlement to ‘good legal assistance’ should form the legitimising basis for the legal aid provider’s actions more than before.
